Camp Wedding Inspiration at Cedar Lake Estates in the Catskills

In the midst of flannel season we’re reminiscing about one of our favorite shoots at Cedar Lakes Estate, nestled in the Catskills . This shoot was all about being together on your wedding day, embracing your fiance and embracing the colder temps. Often couples look at cooler weather as a negative but we wanted to show that cold weather weddings can be just as inviting as warmer ones!

In my experience, I’ve found that oftentimes couples struggle with what to do in the hours before their big moment. Typically, the most pressing question related to this is  “Do we want to see each other for the first time as we walk down the aisle”? “Should we have a first look?” There are no wrong answers! Recently, we’ve found more and more couples who are choosing a third option: getting ready together!  Sometimes it’s overwhelming for couples to realize they are going to be the center of everyone’s attention for a full day, especially if being in the limelight isn’t the dream, getting ready together can help ease some of that anxiety. Wake up, make breakfast, help one another get dressed, have some time to yourselves, be in the moment! Taking the time in the morning to get ready together and focus on each other and  what’s important to you it can really be a kickstart for a great day.

For this shoot, we chose to embrace the elements and have the ceremony in front of the ice covered lake (even with Cedar Lake Estates having an option for an indoor ceremony) . Many ceremony backdrops tend to draw your eyes up high, but we kept this one low to the ground to keep the focus on the couple with the icy lake and the tall pine trees as their beautiful background.

I love when couples pull elements of their personal style into their wedding attire! The groom wore his personal ASOS tweed suit while the bride wore her comfy cardigan over her two-piece BHLDN dress.

We pulled in pops of citrus to stand out from the neutral palette to add some drama and dimension for a more formal setting. To add an element of whimsy grapefruits were used for place cards. The citrus touches were carried over into the dessert display and the yummy arrangements of sweets.

This shoot was beautiful, but also served as a reminder to myself: no matter what we consider to be something that you “must do” in wedding tradition doesn’t mean there aren't other ways to approach your day. You want to see your loved on in the morning before any official first look? Do it. You want to snuggle in with your comfy cardigan despite people urging you to not cover your pretty dress? Do it.  Of course, it’s always smart to take advice from family and friends and listen to your planner's recommendations. In the end though, you know you the best!  Stick to your gut and we’ll always  support that.

Back-to-School Wedding Inspiration Shoot at Bok Building in Philadelphia

This past summer we got in touch with Danfredo Photography to collaborate on this fun styled shoot. We'd never worked with them before, and we were totally crushing on their bright, fun, goofy vibe. Danielle from Danfredo had just learned about this new space in South Philly — The Bok Building — and was super eager to shoot there. It's a former vo-tech high school that closed a few years ago, then was recently purchased by a super talented team of urban planners with grand ideas.

Um — an opportunity to do a styled shoot at a killer old high school building with a rooftop view of Center City Philly? Obviously we were on board. And obviously our concept would be "back-to-school." We'd paint the story of a couple of high school sweethearts. Cue flashbacks of eraser tops on pencils, folded love notes, and writing naughty words on the chalkboard.

Let's back up a moment to give you a glimpse of our process. When we collaborate on a styled shoot, we establish a concept (a realistic story), a color palette, and a couple of stylistic ideas for all vendors to use as a starting point. Then, we encourage each vendor to interpret that concept and color palette in their own way. When everyone has that central starting point paired with the freedom to riff of it, magic happens!

Durga-Kali provided the bridesmaid dresses for this shoot, and since this is one of the first decisions made, we let the dresses inspire our bright color palette. The colors totally have a back-to-school vibe, right?! Sulimay Urban Salon then created a look for each of the models that complemented each of the lady’s bold looks. Today’s wedding trends shy away from the bold, but we think couples should do whatever they want. If you love emerald and sapphire, go for it! Use both! And throw in hot pink while you're at it.

Sebesta Design was totally game for the bold color palette, which was a huge departure from what couples had been asking her for in 2015. She brought her A-game with the varied florals in chemistry beakers and vials, then she took it to the next level with all of that texture — embracing that fun and weird vibe we were going for. We all geeked out over the fun props we got to incorporate with this shoot.

Nutmeg Cake Design did an A+ job with the super cool chalkboard cake she created. You can’t have a back-to-school shoot without chalkboard. Take note — those flowers on the cake are sugar flowers made by Nutmeg. Guess she was gunning for some extra credit.

Hello, Bird created the fun school-themed stationery. She jumped at the excuse to pull from composition books and scantrons as part of her design story. We all shared an "awwww" moment when she pulled out the paper-folded fortune tellers and expertly folded secret love notes. She owned that nostalgia factor.

Every time we look back at this shoot we get all warm and fuzzy. It was so much fun! That’s what your wedding should be: FUN! And perhaps the best part of this shoot is that because it’s all totally attainable. You could actually style a head table this way. You could really get married at The Bok Building. Well, soon, anyway. More on that later. Wink wink.

A Styled Shoot with Pat Robinson at Terrain at Styers

This shoot goes down in the books for us. As we were planning and designing for this shoot, we just let our vision guide it. It wasn’t guided by particular dictates, merely our dream of what could be. Working with a team of crazy-talented, super collaborative vendors resulted in visual magic — and a shoot worthy of being published on Green Wedding Shoes!

Pat Robinson slayed the photography with his masterful way of capturing the natural light. He perfectly captured the details and the entire mood of the day.

Jess and Paige from We Are Wildflowers jumped right in and crafted an amazing greenery backdrop on site. They had the killer idea to make sure the backdrop was mobile so it could be used as both the ceremony backdrop as well as the sweetheart cake table backdrop. This is the perfect example of choosing a wow-factor to splurge on and then getting creative about how to maximize the impact — we totally geek out over that kind of thinking. We love getting working with new vendors during shoots because it gives us great insight into their work ethic, style, and personality, which they had in spades!

Meg of Nutmeg Design ran with our love of patterns. For inspiration, we gave her a patterned fabric swatch that we later made napkins out of for the shoot. She hand painted the same pattern onto a tier of the cake, then adorned the cake with her amazing sugar flowers (which tied in elements from the pattern in 3D form).

Looking over these pictures brings us such joy and gets us excited for the creative possibilities that lie ahead!
